Industrial Safety with a Generative AI Assistant
The challenge
UNACEM Ecuador, part of Grupo UNACEM, one of the region's leading cement producers, operates in an industry where safety, health and environment are transversal and critical values, and information must be available at the exact time and place needed. However, safety knowledge was concentrated in a single security team that operated on administrative hours across a multi-site environment. This created operational bottlenecks: field queries — often urgent and outside office hours — had to wait for a person to become available. Documentation was also spread across many files and videos, making manual search slow and dependent on knowing exactly where to look. The challenge was to build a conversational assistant that answered strictly from UNACEM's own corporate documentation, guaranteeing reliable, verifiable answers with full control over the information.
The solution
Caleidos designed and delivered an end-to-end Generative AI solution on AWS that turned UNACEM's corporate safety documentation into a reliable, always-available conversational assistant. The solution has two components: vIdABOT, the assistant that handles queries over WhatsApp, and vIdADOCS, the backoffice that governs authorized users and the knowledge base that feeds the assistant. On Amazon Bedrock, we incorporated managed foundation models for multimodal understanding of documents and videos, natural-language conversational responses in Spanish, and semantic search over the knowledge base, all under a serverless architecture that scales with demand. The solution was integrated into WhatsApp — the channel employees already use daily — and complemented with an access governance model that distinguishes internal employees from external contractors. We defined a security and responsible AI baseline built on verified users, full control over information, and human validation of all published content, and comparatively evaluated several available models to select the best balance of quality, latency and cost for Spanish-language conversations in a corporate context.
Results
VidaBot put safety information within reach of more than 500 employees, available 24/7 with responses in under 8 seconds, removing bottlenecks and keeping the operation safe. Today the assistant has more than 700 enabled users among employees and contractors, acts as a first line of query that frees up the security team, and every answer can be linked back to its source document or video, reinforcing trust and accuracy. Information governance and security are aligned with ISO/IEC 27001 controls. Given its potential, Grupo UNACEM is evaluating extending the model to new domains and areas of the business, while keeping information security by department.
